More sanding, more Bondo

After all that sanding, I could still see imperfections large enough that I thought the filler primer I planed on using wouldn’t cover them.   The large can of Bondo works like a charm, but it seemed to set up too fast for the amount that I had to mix.  I bought a tube of Bondo Glazing and Spot Putty.  This is the product I should have used from the start.  It’s one part so there’s no mixing.  I can squeeze only what I need out and spread it with my finger over the imperfections.  It seems to be just like the two part Bondo, but easier to use.

I spread it over several imperfections on the dome and I practically covered the rings.  I kind of wonder now if I had used this earlier in the process to cover the layer lines if I would have sanded as much.

I sanded it to what I believed was smooth.  It looked pretty good and I must admit, I was getting somewhat inpatient with my progress.  I decided that it was good enough to use a filler primer on.  I bought a can of the Duplicolor sandable filler primer and I went to town.

Once I was done, I could still see several visible imperfections.  I decided to sand it all off, put on more Bondo, and finish sanding.   It appears pretty good now.  I’m going to rinse with water to get all the dust off and then put on the primer.

As soon as the water dries, I’m hoping to get on a good coat of filler primer and get this bad boy painted!!!
